Montag hands Beatty a book to cover for the one he believes Beatty knows he stole the night before, which is unceremoniously tossed into the trash. Beatty tells Montag that he had a dream in which they fought endlessly by quoting books to each other. Thus Beatty reveals that, despite his disillusionment, he was once an enthusiastic reader. A fire alarm sounds, and Beatty picks up the address from the dispatcher system. They drive recklessly in the fire truck to the destination: Montag's house. What I am supposed to believe in here is that - because of technology - humanity has become so stupid that they couldn't concentrate on books. So books were simplified at first for easier understanding, then banned, then burnt. Why? I am okay with the realistic aspect of "people have short attention spans because of technology so they don't want to read books", but why burn books? I don't see why this would need to happen and why it would become a criminal offense to have books in your home. This is where I understand why so many people prefer to apply this novel's message to censorship, because it works so much better that way. The argument for the technological side of it is weak - even for the time in question. https://mehganmotts.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/e-boek-pdf-xqgxjpojmn-8884.pdf https://mehganmotts.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/e-boek-pdf-sypqmmrinz-3490.pdf https://mehganmotts.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/e-boek-pdf-xeszmznsoy-2561.pdf • ^ Sova, Dawn B. Rather, he meant his 1953 novel as "a story about how television destroys interest in reading literature." It's about, as he puts it above, people "being turned into morons by TV." After graduating from high school, Bradbury's family could not afford for him to attend college so Bradbury began spending time at the Los Angeles Public Library where he essentially educated himself. [26] As a frequent visitor to his local libraries in the 1920s and 1930s, he recalls being disappointed because they did not stock popular science fiction novels, like those of H. G. Wells, because, at the time, they were not deemed literary enough. Between this and learning about the destruction of the Library of Alexandria, [27] a great impression was made on the young man about the vulnerability of books to censure and destruction. Later, as a teenager, Bradbury was horrified by the Nazi book burnings [28] and later by Joseph Stalin's campaign of political repression, the " Great Purge", in which writers and poets, among many others, were arrested and often executed. Fahrenheit 451—the temperature at which paper will burn—is a social satire or a book depicting a “negative utopia” or “dystopian” society in which book reading is an illegal, treasonous act. The government, supported by the people, has banned books because they contain controversial and contradictory ideas. Book readers are considered to be dangerous criminals who can stir people up with their ideas. Firefighters no longer put out fires but instead burn books and the homes of people who keep them. There are some good portraits of Millie, which lend us hints about the great fear and uncertainty that she lives with on a daily basis. Montag's intensity and desire for truth grows over the course of the novel, which I suppose is as it should be. The first hidden word we see seems completely innocuous. Camille (or someone else) has used thumb tacks to spell out “ASK!” on the divider of her cubicle in her St. Louis newspaper’s office. It’s exactly the sort of meaningless, mindless thing you’d do while sitting at your desk. And its message reads as a chipper reminder for Camille to do her job. Once you see it in the context of the rest of the episode, though, “ASK!” seems like the viewer being prodded to ask about hidden mysteries, and like Camille begging to be asked real questions. On Sharp Objects, it surely can’t be a mistake that the word is spelled out with literal pins.
